Proper posh pug designs: flower power & vintage chic

 In News

At Walter & Florence, we like our pug-inspired gifts to be proper posh. And chic.  Apart from pugs, of course, it’s the elegance of 1950s haute couture fashion sketches that inspires our pug designs.

We’re also huge Audrey Hepburn fans and aim to capture the chic we all associate with her vintage style. We study fashion archives and fabric patterns to capture a mid-century vibe for our illustrations.

And one thing’s for sure: flowers were popular in fifties fabric design.  But we say flowers are never out of fashion.

Pug designs and flower power

When it comes to pug designs for our gift collections, we always feature flowers. In our Lazy days collection, a vase of lilacs, one of the most romantic of spring flowers, is on display.

In our Playtime collection, hydrangeas (a firm favourite with us) spill out of a stone urn.

And, this month’s Country Living magazine tells us that hydrangeas are making a major comeback (Heavenly hydrangeas, September issue). No wonder. They’re elegant, dramatic and have both vintage and contemporary appeal.

Hydrangeas and lilacs featured in 1950s fabric design and haute couture fashion. An exquisite example is the 1955 strapless “Arlette” gown by Dior in ivory taffeta adorned with huge sprigs of lilac.

If you’re a fan of fifties fashion like we are, this vintage creation’s a feast for the eyes.

Proper posh pug gifts

So, is that all it takes for our pug designs to be proper posh: flower power and vintage chic? No, there’s more to the story. We put a lot of thought into our product collections, which are all designed and made in England. For example, our fine bone china mugs are manufactured and hand-decorated in Stoke-on-Trent, home of England’s still-thriving ceramics industry.

And, our luxury linen and cotton scatter cushions (made in Lincolnshire) come with cushions pads filled with duck feathers that have the quills removed for extra plumpness.

Our greetings cards and notelets are printed in London on a laid paper in rich cream to create a luxurious, vintage look. It’s soft to the touch and fine lines are impressed on both sides of the card for a lovely, textured feel.

Our attention to detail is something we’re very proud of. And, that’s what helps to make our pug-inspired gifts proper posh.
